Margaret Ann Crawford Schwartz, born in Corpus Christi on April 25, 1946 returned to her heavenly home on October 20, 2016. Margaret led her life helping others, with her special emphasis on young children and those with special needs of all ages. Margaret graduated from Mary Carroll High School in 1964, she married Gary Schwartz in 1969 at St. John's United Methodist Church. In 1970 she started teaching children's Sunday school at St. John's UMC and shortly afterward she began working with the youth of the church. Before long she invited Gary to join her with the youth group and they were very proud that from these endeavors numerous youth went on to become ministers, lawyers and professionals.
Margaret and Gary were instrumental in the early beginnings of Special Olympics in Corpus Christi. They coached the Special Masters athletes beginning in 1980, which later changed its name to Gary's Raiders. Margaret and Gary were the first Unified Coaches in Area 2 of Special Olympics, and 36 years later she remained active in Gary's Raiders until health issues prevented her participation the last six months of her life.
Margaret served as the Assistant Director of the Children's Learning Center at St. John's United Methodist for a number of years before she went back to school and graduated from Del Mar with the credentials to be a Preschool Director. Margaret served as the Director of the Preschool at Grace United Methodist Church in Calallen for many years.
Margaret was instrumental in the creation of the Helper's Sunday School Class at St. John's, a class specifically designed to support Christians with special needs. She was one of the founders of the Broken Rainbow program at St. John's, a program for preschool and elementary age children of divorce. Margaret was also one of the founders of the annual Pumpkin Patch at St. John's.
Margaret is preceded in death by her mother, Fern Roznovak (John) and her father, Bob Crawford (Ruth), and brother in law, John Messina. Margaret leaves many to cherish her memory including husband, Gary; daughter Lori Schwartz Ware (Ricky); son, Eric; grandchildren Dalton Ware and Kylee Ware; sisters Betty Black (Gene), and Cathie Messina; brother Larrick Crawford; several nieces and nephews; her beloved fur babies Morgan and Molly; and thousands of children and youth whose lives she touched through her years in preschool education, church and Special Olympics.
Margaret loved God, her family and friends, and her church. She was a generous soul and led a Christian life, she will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at Seaside Funeral Home on Monday from 6-9pm. Services will be held at St.
John's United Methodist at 5300 S. Alameda, Corpus Christi at 9am on Tuesday followed by burial at the Coastal Bend Veteran's Cemetery 9974 IH 37 Access Rd., Corpus Christi, which will be followed by a noon reception at the church.
