David Heath Donnan, age 89, passed away January 6, 2017. He was born on August 31, 1927 to Louis Vernon Donnan and Mattie Mae Heath in Corpus Christi. Dave grew up in Galveston and Corpus Christi, graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Second Class from July 1945 until February 1947. In 1950, Dave graduated from Sam Houston State with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Industrial Arts, where he was also a football letterman. Later, in 1965, he earned his Master's Degree in Administrative Education and Industrial Arts from Texas A& I University.

He and his wife, Jimmie Wright, recently celebrated 58 years of marriage on November 27. The two met in 1958 when Jimmie was a teacher at Carroll High School and Dave was the baseball coach. Students and Administrators served as matchmakers asking Dave and Jimmie to chaperone Student Council members to a convention in Brownsville. They married one year later.
Dave was employed by the Corpus Christi Independent School District as a faculty member and coach from 1950 - 1968. Although Dave is highly regarded by those who played football and baseball under him, his popularity did not end there. He held the respect and admiration of faculty colleagues and educators throughout the District. He began coaching at Corpus Christi High School (later renamed Miller) but was recruited by Administrators to lead the baseball program when Carroll High School opened in 1957. Five years later, in 1962, Dave took Carroll to its first state tournament appearance in any sport, where the team finished fourth, and a year later the team fell one game shy of a return trip. He spent the final two years of his career at Ray, where he retired in 1970.
After leaving the playing fields and the classroom, Dave began a career in Banking with Texas Commerce Bank spanning more than 15 years, retiring as a Vice President.

Dave was a loving husband, father, coach, teacher, mentor, and friend to many. He will most be remembered for his love of laughter, sense of humor, kind heart, and his love and devotion for family and friends.

On July 16, 2016, Dave become the first inductee into the 1957-1967 Carroll High School Hall of Fame after a unanimous vote from the committee members. "Coach", as he is still known by many, is remembered for his philosophy that winning games was of secondary importance. His priority and real feelings of success came when he saw his ex-players succeed in their personal and professional lives.

Dave is preceded in death by his mother Mattie Mae Heath, his father Louis Vernon Donnan, and siblings Mary, James (Jim), Lawrence (Lad) and Louis.

He is survived by his wife Jimmie Wright Donnan; son John Donnan and wife Shana Donnan (Coto de Caza, California); daughter Lisa Donnan Brunsvold and husband Paul Brunsvold (San Antonio, Texas); and grandchildren David Donnan, Michael Donnan and Matthew Donnan; and Jennifer ‘Elise' Brunsvold and Regan Brunsvold; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Seaside Funeral Home. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church at 3151 Reid Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas 78404.
